What is Tantra?

Tantra is a sophisticated science of self-realization. It is a sacred and millennia-old philosophy that was widely practiced in Asia between the 11th and 12th centuries and explained in Indian ancient scriptures under the science of Yoga alongside the Ayurveda teachings. Tantra intertwines a set of methodologies, texts, meditations, and practices that are passed on from teacher to student over a long period. Tantra can also be understood as a path toward freedom and liberation from inner limitations-- often unconscious beliefs or conditioning- through an alchemical journey of transformation from within.

The starting point for understanding how Tantra works is through the body. In Tantra, the body is regarded as the temple of the soul and an entrance point to both self-knowledge and to the cosmo which is in divine connection with.

There are three forms of Tantra distinguished by the spiritual tradition:

  1. Monastic Tantra - practiced in Tibetan monasteries through meditations and studying of ancient texts

  2. White Tantra - practiced through Kundalini or Kriya Yoga, and

  3. Pink / Red Tantra - bodily practices involve conscious sexuality as a tool to transcend the physical level and to grow and expand on the spiritual plane.

The seeker who chooses Tantra for their self-development is usually someone who doesn’t conform to the status quo, is driven by curiosity and creativity, and is ready for big shifts in their life.

Because Tantra works to shift one´s energetic body, especially one’s sexual or Kundalini energy, it’s important to be aware of the potential challenges that might arise while walking this path such as having strong emotional releases or suddenly wanting to make a big change in one´s life.

Some benefits of applying Tantric practices are that one will experience an expansion of sensorial perception, intensified sensuality, and a deepening of love for oneself and others beyond conditions.

Ultimately, Tantra invites the balance of the two divine energies of the universe, the masculine and feminine. Before one can realize its magic, however, one must commit to walking the path with curiosity, respect, and humility.
